WWE SummerSlam is live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Tonight's Summerslam card is loaded with thirteen matches, including the Kickoff Show. WWE's big summer blow-off special will crown the first ever WWE Universal Champion as Finn Balor takes on Seth Rollins. Also, Dolph Ziggler gets the opportunity of a lifetime as he challenges Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship. Brock Lesnar makes his return to a WWE ring as he takes on Randy Orton. It's Suplex City vs. Viperville.
Let's take a look at each match.
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton
The recent talk of Bill Goldberg has me more intrigued than the actual match itself. When Lesnar vs. Orton was announced I felt just 'meh,' about it. WWE is in a tricky spot here. On one hand, Randy just came back from injury and you'd think WWE would want to build him up considering he's going to be doing live TV and house shows after Summerslam. But, the problem with that is he'd have beat BROCK LESNAR! Randy Orton should not be the WWE Superstar who beats Lesnar. That needs to be saved for someone like Finn Balor, Sami Zayn or Samoa Joe. If WWE books a clean finish then it has to be Lesnar going over. If there's going to be interference, I'd rather see Goldberg cost Lesnar the match instead of Bray Wyatt preventing Orton from winning.
Winner: Brock Lesnar
Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor for the WWE Universal Championship
With all the hype WWE has put into Finn Balor and the Demon I can't see him losing this match. I think it was a mistake to debut the Demon character so soon. I would have had Finn lose here and chase the Universal Champion, Rollins and book the feud in a way that it made more sense for the the Demon to debut at a later time. But, now that we're here, if WWE puts the belt on Rollins then I'm afraid it's going to feel like a "been here, done that," feel to his reign.
Winner: Finn Balor
Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE World Championship
This match does nothing for me. I have zero interest in Dolph Ziggler whether he's a heel or a face. Unfortunately, WWE has done so much damage to Ziggler over the years that there's nothing they can do to make me care about him. I also have not been impressed with Dean Ambrose's title run. He doesn't talk nor carry himself like a champion, but keeping the belt on him is a much better idea than putting it on Dolph. Dean retains until he drops it to Styles at the next SmackkDown only WWE Network Special.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte for the WWE Women's Championship
It's clear Sasha Banks just isn't connecting with the RAW crowds. WWE hasn't done her any favors with how they've wriiten her character either. It's unfortunate too, because Sasha can flat out wrestle. I was enjoying Charlotte's work as a heel champion and was surprised when WWE took the belt off her on RAW. It's time to go back to the more over Charlotte.
John Cena vs. AJ Styles
It's time for AJ Styles to have a run with the title. John Cena gains little by winning here. Add in the fact he has work outside of the WWE, including season two of American Grit on FOX and you have nothing more than a part-time wrestler which has been addressed by the man himself. Styles has been putting on fantastic matches since his debut. He should go over clean in what I expect to be an excellent match and go on to feud with Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship.
Winnner: AJ Styles
Rusev vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE U.S. Championship
Is the plan to give Reigns a secondary title in an effort to rebuild him up to main event level? If so, fine; but, the secondary title for him to carry is the Intercontinental Championship. WWE is finally getting Rusev back to being a reputable heel champion and it would be mistake to derail all that effort again.
The New Day vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson for the WWE Tag Team Championship
I don't like the way Gallows and Anderson are written. I don't like the way New Day has been written for this feud. Hell, I just don't like this feud. On paper, it looks and sounds great, but the execution has been so tone deaf it's maddening. If the plan is for Gallows and Anderson to become bad ass, outlaw, ass kickers then give them a run with the titles. If the plan is to keep them in 50/50 booking hell then keep the belts on New Day and keep the tag team division the comedy division that it's been for the past year.
Winners: Gallows & Anderson
The Miz vs. Apollo Crews for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
The hype for this feud has been non-existant. The Miz is talented and is asked to carry multiple segments on SmackDown. While Crews may be talented in the ring, he isn't even trusted to promote his match for the Intercontinental Championship. I have been enjoying Miz's title run and want to see it continue.
Winner: The Miz
Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens
The chemistry between these two teams is off the charts. The tag team division would be in a much better place with either of these teams holding the belts. This match should open and get the show off to a hot start. I'm hoping to see this feud continue past Summerslam as I think there's more left to do with these four supremely talented individuals.
Winners: Enzo & Cass
Becky Lynch, Naomi & Carmella vs. Natalya & Alexa Bliss
With the suspension of Eva Marie does that open the door for the return of Nikki Bella? I wish WWE had bigger plans for Becky Lynch for Summerslam. Hopefully after this filler match, she gets back on track next week.
Winner: Natalya, Alexa Bliss & Nikki Bella
Cesaro vs. Sheamus
I like that this is a best-of-seven series with this being the first match. I'm not sitting in the Cesaro section as I feel he's slotted exactly where he should be. I also feel Sheamus has a renewed oulook on his position since the brand split occurrred and if given time these two should put together a freat match.
Sami Zayn & Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz
Zayn and Neville should make for an exciting tag team. WWE has made it clear that the Dudley's are nothing more than jobbers at this stage of their careers. Does Bubba have one last singles run left in him?
Winners: Sami Zayn & Neville
American Alpha, The Usos & The Hype Bros vs. Tyler Breeze, Fandango, The Vaudevillians & The Ascension
The only importance this match carries is who the next challengers are for American Alpha. Hopefully it's the Usos, as heels.
Winners: American Alpha, The Usos & The Hype Bros
Enjoy the show!
