ROUND ONE: Almeida tried to establish his low kicks when the fight started. Rivera kept the pressure on Almeida and dropped him with a straight left with 3:12 left in the round. Almeida continued with low kicks and there was a nice exchange as both fighters landed punches with 1:30 to go. With 1:14 left Rivera connected flush with a right hand on Almeida’s chin that put him on the canvass. Both fighters were bleeding around the eye area at this time in the fight. The remainder of the round saw both fighters get their offense in but neither doing any serious damage.
ROUND THREE: Rivera shot in as the last round started and slammed Almeida to the mat and took top position. Almeida worked his way to the fence at the 4:05 marker and was able to get to his feet. At 3:40; they separated and were back to the center of the cage. The fight stayed on the feet until Jimmie Rivera landed a takedown with just under a minute left in the fight. Almeida was able to get back to his feet quickly though. The fight ended back on the feet with both fighters landing punches.
This was a really good fight. Rivera was able to time his right hand perfectly and did some serious damage with it. Almeida is a tough SOB because he was he was taking everything Rivera was throwing at him and kept moving forward. This was a big, big win for Rivera. He said if Cody Garbrandt was still on the shelf then he wants TJ Dillashaw in an interim title fight.
Gian Villante (15-7) vs. Patrick Cummins (9-4) – Light Heavyweight 205 lbs.
Result: Patrick Cummins over Gian Villante by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
ROUND ONE: Cummins shot in 30 seconds into the fight but Villante was able to fight it off. He tried again seconds later and ate multiple hammer fists to the head from Villante. Cummins had to be hurt from the hammer fists because when they separated Cummins looked to be wobbly and Villante unloaded with right hands on the feet. Cummins was able to shake it off but an accidental head butt made a pretty a big cut on the top of Cummins head. Big John had to call for time with 3:40 left to go in the round. The fight remained on the feet with Cummins trying for takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Finally with 1:20 left Cummins was able to take the back but Villante was able to get back to his feet. By the end of the round Cummins was back in the fight.
ROUND TWO: Cummins shot in 45 seconds into the round but Villante was able to stuff it. The fight continued on the feet with Cummins getting the better of the exchanges. He started to beat Villante to the punch because Villante was clearly gassed by the end of the round.
ROUND THREE: A minute into the round Villante landed two big right hands that rocked Cummins. Cummins regained his senses and the two stood center cage and tried to knock each other out by throwing big right hands. Both guys were gassed and with 1:45 left Cummins rocked Villante. Cummins wasn’t able to capitalize and sat in the clinch until Big John separated them with 36 seconds left in the fight. They tried to knock each other’s heads off for the remainder of the fight.
I will never back Gian Villante in another fight. That was another fight he gave away because he has absolutely zero cardio. He had Cummins hurt multiple times but couldn’t put him away because the guy had no energy to throw more than one punch at a time. Kudos to Cummins for fighting through a nasty cut due to an accidental head butt and toughing out a hard fought victory.
Dennis Bermudez (17-6) vs. Darren Elkins (23-5) – Featherweight 145 lbs.

The round ended with Elkins on Bermudez’s back.

Bermudez was having success landing with punches on the breaks. With just under a minute left Bermudez began having more success landing on the feet. The fight ended with Elkins going for a takedown.
Wow, I’m a little surprised by that decision. Granted the first two rounds were close but the last round was definitely to Bermudez. This was a super competitive fight and a very tough one to score. Both guys looked great in the fight but tonight was Elkins’ night.
Kelvin Gastelum (13-2) vs. Chris Weidman (13-3) – Middleweight 185 lbs.

Gastelum pounced and reigned down punches but wasn’t able to finish Weidman due to the horn.
ROUND TWO: Weidman landed a nice straight right hand and followed it up with a takedown with 3:40 to go. He took Gastelum’s back and contolled him from top position for the rest of the round. Gastelum seemed content to concede the round.
ROUND THREE: Gastelum came out very aggressively to start the third round. He landed a few shots but Weidman came back with power shots of his own at the four minute mark. Weidman scored with a takedown with just over three minutes left but Gastelum got back to his feet instantly. With 2:32 left Weidman was able to take Gastelum down again and sunk in an arm-triangle choke with 1:20 left and got the tap.
Well color me surprised. That was an excellent performance from Chris Weidman. I am extremely impressed with the way he fought. This was a huge win for him considering he came into the fight on a three fight losing streak. I’m not willing to say Weidman is back, but this was a good start. Weidman says he’s back and calls out Michael Bisping.
