UFC on FOX 22 makes its way to the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. The early prelims will air on Fight Pass starting at 3:30/2:30 p.m. CT, with Fox Sports 1 taking over at 5/4 p.m CT for the prelims. FOX takes over for the main card at 8/7 p.m. CT.
The main event features UFC darling Paige VanZant in a strawweight bout against veteran Michelle Waterson. VanZant will look to keep her momentum going after a highlight wheel knockout of Bec Rawlings. The co-main features a fight between two up and coming prospects as Sage Northcutt takes on Mickey Gall.
The main card rounds out with Urijah Faber taking on Brad Pickett in a bantamweight bout and in the welterweight division, knockout specialist Mike Perry goes up against Alan Jouban.
Paige VanZant (7-2) vs. Michelle Waterson (13-4) – Strawweight 115 lbs.
Current Odds: VanZant -120; Waterson -110
Michelle Waterson last found herself inside the cage back in July of 2015 when she submitted Angela Magana. It was her only fight under the UFC banner, after accumulating a 3-1 record fighting in Invicta. After battling injuries for the past year and a half Waterson returns in to the cage looking to stall VanZant’s rise in the strawweight division. Will the long layoff have any effect?
Paige VanZant is 4-1 since joining UFC. After getting submitted by Rose Namajunas in a fight she was never competitive in, VanZant bounced back with a highlight reel TKO of Bec Rawlings at UFC on FOX 21. The problem I have with VanZant is she leaves herself open and takes too many punches. I also think Waterson has the edge if the fight goes to the ground. I expect this to be a very competitive fight, and I can see it going either fighter’s way. If Waterson can maintain distance and avoid the clinch then I see her taking the fight.
Pick: Waterson by decision
Sage Northcutt (8-1) vs. Mickey Gall (3-0) – Welterweight 170 lbs.
Current Odds: Gall -120; Northcutt -110
Mickey Gall is 3-0, all by submission so we don’t really know how well his stand-up game is at this point in his young career. Add to it the fact he hasn’t fought anyone close to the caliber of Sage Northcutt and you’re left with a tough fight to predict. If Gall is to win, he has to take the fight to the ground where Northcutt has been submitted before.
Sage Northcutt holds the advantage in striking and should keep the fight standing at all costs. Northcutt was submitted by Bryan Barbereno at UFC on FOX 18, and now he’s fighting a guy who has won all three of his career fights by submission. I think Northcutt is the faster, more athletic fighter and will be able to take advantage on the feet.
Pick: Northcutt by TKO
Urijah Faber (33-10) vs. Brad Pickett (26-12) – Bantamweight 135 lbs.
Current Odds: Faber -400; Pickett +300
As a huge fan of Urijah Faber, I’m sad to see him go. Does the future hall of famer have one more vintage performance left in him? Faber is the superior fighter in all facets when he goes up against Brad Pickett. Pickett is 1-4 in his previous five fights and his skills and chin have abandoned him.
While Faber isn’t the fighter he once was either, he’s by far the better grappler with excellent takedown defense. Although the California Kid is 1-3 in his previous four, I see him going out a winner in his final fight.
Pick: Faber by submission
Mike Perry (9-0) vs. Alan Jouban (14-4) – Welterweight 170 lbs.
Current Odds: Perry -130; Jouban ev.
Mike Perry is downright scary on his feet. He’s 9-0 in his career with nine knockouts. Perry marches forward while looking for the knockout punch. Perry leaves himself open when continuing to pressure and will take damage because of it.
Alan Jouban is 5-2 under the UFC banner, with three of the wins coming by way of knockout. He took a decision against Belal Muhammed at UFC Fight night 90 in his most recent fight. While Jouban doesn’t have the power of Perry, he is the more well-rounded fighter. Expect fireworks in this one and don’t blink because you might miss the finish.
Pick: Jouban by TKO
