For the first time ever the UFC makes its way to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada for UFC Fight Night 89. The main event is a #1 Contender's bout between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson. The co-main event features Donald Cerrone vs. Patrick Cote in what should be another exciting fight.
The rest card should also be highly entertaining. Former hockey enforcer Steve Bosse goes up against Sean O’Connell, while in the lightweight division we get Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Thibault Gouti and finally in the flyweight women’s division Valerie Letourneau takes on Joanne Calderwood.
The main event is a battle of welterweights between MacDonald and Thompson. This is a hugely important fight for both fighters, but for different reasons. For Thompson a win will most likely lead to a shot at the title. A win for MacDonald will also get him another crack at the title, but it will also in all likelihood land him a lucrative new contract with the UFC. MacDonald becomes a free agent after his fight with Thompson Saturday night, and the fighter has made it clear he's open to all offers.
It's been almost a year since Rory MacDonald has stepped into the cage. Who can forget the brutal war against Robbie Lawler? The question is, how much did that fight take out of him? On the other hand Stephen Thompson comes into the fight off of a surprising first round knockout of Johny Hendricks back in February. This should be an excellent fight with much at stake for both men.
Donald Cerrone takes on Patrick Cote in the co-main event. For Cerrone this will his second fight at welterweight, whereas, it'll be the seventh for Cote. Cerrone was on an eight fight winning streak until Rafael dos Anjos knocked him out in 66 seconds in his first shot at the title. After that fight Donald moved to 170 where he defeated Alex Oliveira. Patrick Cote has won his last three fights beating Ben Saunders, Josh Burkman and Joe Riggs. This too should be a fantastic fight, but I think Cerrone holds the advantage in almost every area.
